Good Afternoon May 6 2020

Every morning my door gets drenched with sanitizer and today there was a planned fighter jet fly by I didn’t know about until I heard it.

I like less traffic in streets but this stay at home order has not been good for me and my health.

On this Earthday 2020

We are reminded how intertwined we all are around the planet.

With shortages of supplies, we are reminded how to conserve these, the value of these items, the value of making them and those that make and grow them.

Crude oil in the United States monetary value is less than $0 (it has to be paid to be taken away). Traffic is down. Many types of pollution are down including noise and air pollution.

Datacommuting is being used more and more so we can still stay connected and conduct business that does not have need to be done in person. We are finding many new apps and methods that help meet this need as we stay at home whether it be for distance learning, having fun at home, seeing commercial news reports done from home, connecting with fitness class at home, for taking care of a rover on mars, or for office work.

We are reminded how important our time is outside. By missing some people we care about we remember how important they are.

We are reminded how important the people that take care of our recycling is. And those that take out garbage that we can’t find a way to recycle.

2020 census link

Every 10 years the United States does a census. Many people have got a letter in the mail or at their door . It gives a code to type in at www. my2020census.gov

some people may mistakenly think the letter is junk mail since no name is on it. If you accidentally through it away or didn’t get a letter there is still a way of entering without the code.

They say doing it online saves time and money for processing. They will send out paper survey for those not done online.

Datacommuting for preventative measures

I have a book called Datacommuting. It is based on telecommuting and I call it Datacommuting since today it relies more on data communications than the telephone.  I will be watching and see how everyone implements these things. I received an email that Education Minnesota has webpage https://educationminnesota.org/resources/in-the-classroom/Coronavirus/Educator-resources with apps to use. I will try to see if there are any reductions in pollution, traffic congestion, accidents and spread of disease. There will most likely be cost savings as well. I would like to see how much is counterproductive, such as efforts to close restaurants and have more deliveries- drive throughs, and kids going to childcare instead of schools. See if people are still able to get enough exercise.

Update April 14 2020: Information shared on https://mn.gov/covid19/ shows freeway traffic down. However fatal crashes have actually risen for this time period compared to other years. This is likely due to speeding. Please stay safe for essential travel.

Changing clocks

That time a year in US except Arizona and Hawaii start daylight savings before we go to sleep Saturday we switch clocks  one hour ahead Saturday March 7
Daylight Savings Time starts at 3am DT (2am ST) Sunday March 8 2020.
Remember most computer, mobile phones. Tablets and some TVs and other devices switch on their own.
It is important that your device has the correct time zone if you have the ability to set it.
A few older devices made 2005 or before may switch on the wrong date, since the time of time change was changed by congress in 2005 and daylight savings time was extended in 2007.  (not regular computers that have software updates, or cell phones that update time from carrier)
The spring time change (March) time we make sure we are getting enough sleep.
The enough sleep is especially important because the risk of heart attacks increase the Monday and Tuesday after the spring time change http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/03/120307162555.htm
Smoke detectors now since batteries last longer (some up to 10 years) should be tested every month to see if batteries need to be replaced instead of replacing them on a schedule.
Smoke detectors are of course important year round. It is very sad to see someone not making it out of a fire.

E-file taxes

originally published Jan 31 2015
A reminder: instead of using all of those paper forms, why not e-file your taxes? It’s quicker, eliminates errors, and if  you save to your computer instead of printing it’s better for the environment. (I recommend a backup either on a flash drive, online or both). Also choosing direct deposit, will allow you to receive your refund faster and not worry about getting to the bank. Choosing direct withdraw will allow you to save mailing or writing a check.
There are several ways to e-file:
On your own: In MN for income tax return http://www.revenue.state.mn.us/
Most providers have you go through an interview process, so it is different than filling out paper forms on your own that can make it more likely to make a mistake. Calculations are built in.
In the USA: http://www.irs.gov/Filing/E-File-Options
Also most tax preparers have the ability to e-file your income tax return, just double check before you decide to go with the provider and you can choose direct deposit as well.
Most business taxes (other than individual income) in MN requires e-filing.
Home owners can also submit property tax rebate online for free http://www.revenue.state.mn.us/
Renters can e-file with https://efile-express.com (there may be a fee) or use the software with your income tax return filing (you may need to print the form or transfer it to the M1PR form sent to you in the mail).
